Reflection
Like what I said in class, watching shows and listening to music are a few of my favourite pastimes. My favourite genre of TV is definitely sitcoms and recently, I’ve been catching on “Friends” on cable TV. What really intrigues me about the show is the never-ending number of ideas the producers came up with for the show. I mean unlike local sitcoms, “Friends” actually lasted for ten seasons which amounted to over 200+ episodes. Browsing through the episode guide on tv.com, it makes me wonder how the producers did it. Did they thought of a vague storyline that spans ten seasons? I doubt so, because I read somewhere that a show can be cancelled at any point if the ratings were bad. For example, I was watching this other sitcom called 8 simple rules and I was rather disappointed that the show was canceled and the story didn’t really end with a proper “ending”. That brings me to another question. How can a show be canceled just like that with a cliffhanger? I guess it’s a TV station thing and that’s one of the reasons why I’m here i guess.
Ok, back to friends. I’m currently at season 2 and honestly, not one episode is going to my “mediocre” list. Every episode keeps me laughing and coming back for more. Even though “Friends” started in 1994 and ended its run 5 years ago, it’s still around and people are starting to discover it every single day. I tried thinking of reasons why is that the case for “friends” and not other shows but I couldn’t think of anything significant. “Friends” is kind of like the rubik’s cube. Like the cube, “Friends” was original and fresh. Like the cube, even though it has ended; in the cube’s case, solved, fans of the cube and “friends” keep going back for more as if they would discover something new, even though nothing’s changed.
Enough with the analytical crap. It’s time for the real stuff that I want to talk about. There are 6 characters in “friends” – Ross, Chandler, Joey, Monica, Rachel and Phoebe. I believe that at there would definitely be at least one of them in every one of us. For me, it would be Monica and Ross. Like Ross, I like to bore people with very technical stuff; that’s if I were to talk to people. Like Monica, I like everything to be just like what I want and I’m kind of a neat freak but not to her extend.
Anyways, many people would find the way I talk kind of strange, because all my life I have been watching TV – even those lousy channel 8 dramas- and I’m pretty sure that I speak and like the characters from the dramas now and it can be really annoying. Especially when I start have one of those “Speaking out your thoughts” moments. *Thinking: Hmm, that should be enough reflection for now.*
Short Story:
This is the last chapter that Johnny will ever write before it’s all over for him. Two more weeks, just two more weeks and he will be sentenced. Johnny clenches his fist and slams it on the cold hard floor as he tries to hold back his tears. If only he had thought of the consequences. Johnny lifts up the stack of paper from the ground and hugs it close. He takes a glance at the front page which states “the memoirs of Johnny Ruso” and closes his eyes. After letting out a short breath, he proceeds to a small wooden table at the corner of his cell and starts to scribble. After just two lines, Johnny’s tears start flowing down uncontrollably, as he breaks the pencil for the 33rd time. “Why did I kill her”, Johhny muttered to himself again.
Openers:
It might help if they were more ‘action’ oriented such that I’d want to know what’s about to happen to the character.
Reflection:
I was a fan of Friends and yes I really liked the series except for the last season or so as the jokes became recycled. But I agree it was a phenomenonal hit and I’m glad you’ve discover it!
